Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust

Our Mission

Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust (NEWLT) was formed in 1996 to preserve and restore the natural heritage of Northeast Wisconsin lands and waters through partnerships in land conservancy and resource management.

Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust is a non-profit, publicly supported organization as determined by the Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(3) and it is licensed by the State of Wisconsin as a charitable organization. The land trust receives its financial support from citizen contributions and grants from the public and private sectors. NEWLT is also eligible for Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources grants for protection projects that qualify under the Stewardship and Lake Protection programs.

The need for a land trust in Northeast Wisconsin has been highlighted by studies showing the benefits of preserving wetlands and the high costs of urban sprawl. Both the Nature Conservancy and the WDNR recognize that a regional land trust can provide protection for resources that do not match their specific criteria.

NEWLT's geographic area includes the Fox and Wolf Rivers' basins, as well as the area drained by the Oconto and Peshtigo Rivers. Cradled by the bluffs and topography of the Niagara Escarpment on the East and nourished by a myriad of rich waterways stretching far to the West, our area is blessed with a unique natural heritage.  Other land trusts in our area include the Door County Land Trust, the Sheboygan Area Land Conservancy, North Central Conservancy Trust and the North Woods Land Trust.

Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust uses these Basic Project Criteria:

  • Does the property aid in the conservation and careful stewardship of stream corridors, woodlands and wetland communities?
  • Is the property vital to the maintenance of surface water quality and groundwater recharge or discharge areas?
  • Is the property part of natural areas that represent the unique biological and geological character of the region?
  • Will the property help balance public benefits such as aesthetic enjoyment and ecologically compatible leisure activity with the preservation of ecological integrity?
