Middle Peninsula Land Trust

The Middle Peninsula Land Trust was founded in 1997 to protect and preserve, for the benefit of the public, the natural, scenic and historic resources of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex Counties. In five years, through an all-volunteer effort, we proudly achieved the following results:

Land Protection: Assisted in protecting 525 acres, valued at $599,000. In 2002, we expect to complete conservation easements on another 140 acres, valued at $550,000.

Conservation Outreach: Reached more than 100 landowners on the Middle Peninsula with information on easements and other conservation options. We also offered workshops to attorneys and accountants on the tax and estate benefits of land conservation.

Public Access: Secured a $150,000 grant for land acquisition for the new Winter Harbor/Garden Creek Nature Preserve in Mathews County and assisted in the donation of 100 acres in Gloucester County for a park site.

Land Use & Development: Participated in the development of a regional plan for sustainable economic development, in the creation of the Dragon Run Watershed Special Management Plan and in the activities of the Middle Peninsula Conservation partnership.
