Black Swamp Conservancylast updated: September 2010
The Black Swamp Conservancy (BSC), a land trust, is a regional, non-profit organization established to directly support the conservation of land and water resources in Northwest Ohio.

Our supporters are people who want to preserve the integrity of their communities as they continue to grow. Proper community planning to protect native habitats, agricultural areas, and scenic views will help to enhance the quality of living today and forever.

BSC was formed in July of 1993 by a group of citizens who were alarmed by the rapidly accelerating rate of development in rural Northwest Ohio. These people recognized the need to protect and enhance the best remaining natural and agricultural areas in this region and promote responsible stewardship of the land.

The Black Swamp Conservancy is committed to preserving Northwest Ohio's natural and agricultural heritage.

To carry out our mission we:

  • Secure and enforce conservation easements to permanently protect privately owned natural and agricultural lands.
  • Acquire—through donation or purchase—natural or agricultural lands that are left undeveloped.
  • Partner with other organizations and individuals that support our mission.
  • Work with land-use planners, communities, and elected officials who are interested in creative ways to balance growth with today's conservation challenges.
  • Educate the public about the need for—and the benefits of—land conservation and protection.
