New Haven Land Trust

The New Haven Land Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to land conservation, environmental education and community vegetable gardening in New Haven. The Trust currently maintains seven preserves, close to 60 acres, with a variety of habitats: shore-front, salt marsh, river bank, and trap-rock ridge. In addition the Land Trust manages the Community Vegetable Garden Program which provides land, technical assistance and supplies to almost 50 community vegetable gardens. The New Haven Land Trust is a 501(c)3 and is supported by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the City of New Haven and individual donors.

The New Haven Land Trust achieves its mission by:

  1. Community Gardening: Assist neighborhoods in development and maintenance of approximately 50 gardens with materials, supplies, utilities, technical assistance and neighborhood outreach. Sponsor annual conferences.
  2. Land Conservation: Acquire, preserve and protect open space; conduct educational programs; distribute newsletters; nature walks; outreach to schools and neighborhoods.
  3. Environmental Education: Installing an educational kiosk at Long Wharf Nature Preserve and developed two self guiding nature walks at Long Wharf Nature Preserve and Quinnipiac Meadows/Fargeorge Nature Preserve. Long Wharf Nature Preserve serves as the site for Horseshoe crab research by Sacred Heart University.
