Flathead Land Trust

The Flathead Land Trust is dedicated to the conservation of northwest Montana’s land and water legacy through voluntary agreements with private landowners.

We are a local land trust founded in 1985 by a group of forward-thinking community members interested in maintaining the Flathead Valley's natural beauty, clean water, and special places that sustain our high quality of life.   In 1988, Flathead Land Trust received its first donated conservation easement from Alice Sowerwine.  It's a wonderful 157-acre parcel located on Fennon Sough in Lower Valley and a perfect beginning to our important work in the Flathead Valley.

Although our mission continues, we have grown a lot since our inception and in 2013 received our accreditiation status by the national Land Trust Accreditation Commision. After an extensive, rigorous evaluation, Flathead Land Trust is one of 230 land trusts of 1,700 land trusts in the nation to receive the recognition that we meet national standards of excellence for land trusts and land conservation.
