The mission of the California Rangeland Trust is to conserve the open space, natural habitat and stewardship provided by California's ranches.
How the Rangeland Trust Is Different From Other Land Trusts
The California Rangeland Trust is governed entirely by ranchers – men and women who understand the importance and challenges of maintaining working landscapes. The Rangeland Trust worked closely with rangeland owners to protect and enhance the environmental and economic benefits that these working landscapes provide. In addition to drawing on the expertise of its Board of Directors, the Rangeland Trust has relationships with advisors from private industry, the University of California, government agencies and other land trusts. Our greatest advantage is that landowners have the confidence that the Rangeland Trust understands their concerns and will work with them to effectively protect and improve the environmental quality of their ranches and the economic stability of their ranching operations.
How the Rangeland Trust Works
The Rangeland Trust uses a conservation toolbox approach to work with landowners to permanently protect their ranchlands:
- The primary tool the Rangeland Trust uses is the agricultural conservation easement, which can be donated in full or in part by the landowner or purchased by the Rangeland Trust.
- The Rangeland Trust can also participate as the easement holder for mitigation projects on rangeland.
- The Rangeland Trust holds workshops throughout the state to educate landowners about options for generational succession and business planning as well as income diversification strategies.
In addition to providing these tools directly to landowners, the Rangeland Trust also participates in collaborative efforts with other conservation organizations to gain public support and funding for rangeland protection.
