Uptown Farms

By:

Uptown FarmsMatt and Kate Lambert of Uptown Farms were the inaugural recipients of the Missouri Leopold Conservation Award®, which honors Missouri landowner achievement in voluntary stewardship and management of natural resources.

Uptown Farms consists of 2,000 acres of row crop and hay production, and also includes a herd of Red Angus cattle and a small flock of Hampshire and Dorper sheep.

The Lamberts have transitioned their farm to completely no-till, and they use cover crops to help avoid soil erosion and run-off.

When the Lamberts began farming they quickly realized that the "best farms" were not within reach for someone that young. The farms available to rent were often located in challenging spots with poor soil quality and highly erodible land. Matt and Kate took these 'leftovers' as a challenge to overcome by innovation and adaptation.

By committing to complete no-till, they have reduced fuel costs. Their soil has dramatically improved through less compaction and disruption, minimizing erosion and runoff and increasing soil organic matter.

Uptown Farms is located near Laclede. The Lamberts are avid contributors to their local and statewide agricultural community.
