About Virginia Natural Fish Company

The Virginia Natural Fish Company (VNFC) is supplied by the Virginia Aqua-Farmers Network (VAN). VAN is a new-generation cooperative enabling small aquaculture farmers, predominately in Southside Virginia, to supply locally-produced, quality fresh fish and prawns by pooling resources for production and marketing. VAN is committed to sustainability, and its products are raised locally in carefully constructed freshwater ponds without the use of herbicides, fungicides or algicides. This ensures that these well-managed ponds will not negatively impact the environment or cause pollution in surrounding waters. Our products are available to purchase online, at local farmers markets and other outlets. We are also available to supply restaurants interested in sourcing local, all natural ingredients.

VAN producers raise channel catfish, rainbow trout, hybrid striped bass, and freshwater prawns (shrimp), which are sold under the Virginia Natural Fish Company brand.

What Does VAN Provide Its Members?

Technical Assistance and Training – VAN, working with Virginia State University and Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension, provides assistance with pond management, raising warm water and cold water fish in open pond and cage culture systems, water quality, regulatory concerns, and sustainability.

Purchasing – As a cooperative, VAN is able to purchase animals for stocking, feed and other products in bulk and passes the savings along to the farmers.

Logistics – VAN members work together to assist with pond stocking, harvesting and transportation to processing and storage facilities.

Cost Share – If the VAN member resides in a “tobacco footprint” county, a cost share may be available to offset aquaculture equipment purchases and other infrastructure start-up costs.

Marketing – VAN has a marketing manager, who works with chefs, restaurants and caterers, as well as consumers to promote and sell VAN products under the Virginia Natural Fish Company brand. VAN is currently marketing its products through small niche markets, such as farmers markets and restaurants, to receive top dollar for its top quality fish and prawns.

How Do I Become a Member?

There are two types of membership – Affiliate Producers and Member-Owners.

Affiliate Producers – Affiliate producers may join at any time.  These producers must fill out an Affiliate Producer Certificate, and by signing this certificate, agree to follow the VAN production and harvesting protocols outlined in the document.  A joining fee of $500 must accompany the signed certificate.  An annual service fee of $250 must be paid each year.  Benefits include discounts on animals and feed, as well as assistance from experts and other members. If VAN and the affiliate producer are satisfied with the arrangements, the producer may apply to become a member owner.

Member Owners – Member-owners of VAN must complete a member certificate, and by signing, agree to follow the VAN production and harvesting protocols.  A one-time fee of $3,000 must accompany the certificate.  An annual fee to be determined by the Management Team will be assessed each year.  Member-owners receive the same discounts on animals and feed, assistance from experts and other growers, and own a share in VAN.
