Thurston Conservation District

The Thurston Conservation District promotes voluntary stewardship among private landowners in Thurston County. Our services are free to the residents of our County. We are committed to finding available resources and coordinating them in a way that they meet the needs of our local community. The Thurston Conservation District was formed back in 1948 by the residents of the county. Conservation Districts (CDs) are legal subdivisions of state government that administer programs to conserve natural resources. Each District is self-governed by volunteers who establish priorities and set policy. CDs exist in practically every county throughout the United States.

As we move into the coming months and years, we realize that large agricultural land-holding are becoming somewhat a thing of the past in Thurston County. As a result, we are committed to adjusting to the needs of our urban community needs as well as preserving our precious local farmland.

To conserve, sustain, and protect our natural resources for the people of Thurston County through: rural and urban partnerships, fostering volunteerism, cooperation, education, leadership, and technical and financial assistance.

To create healthy, functioning ecosystems in Thurston County through advocacy, education and technical assistance efforts; thereby empowering every citizen of Thurston County to be a steward of the environment.

The District believes that this vision will be achieved if certain core values are consistently and unfailingly applied:

  • Teamwork and Partnerships
  • Environmental Stewardship
  • Natural Resouce Advocacy
  • Hard Work and Excellence
  • Responsible, Legal and Ethical Use of Financial Resources
  • Commitment to healthy, viable natural resource systems
  • Voluntary Action as Opposed to Regulatory Reaction
  • Utilizing the best science available at all times
  • Providing outstanding service to the residents of Thurston County.
