Taylor County Extension

The county, with a population of 122,000, is located in north central Texas and is the regional trade center for an 18-county trade area. The first county seat was located in Buffalo Gap, but was later moved to the present location in Abilene.

The county is home to three universities—Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University — with a campus of Cisco Junior College and Texas State Technical College also located here.

Major employers are Dyess Air Force Base, Abilene Independent School District and the Abilene State School. The county also has two major medical centers,  Hendrick Health System and Abilene Regional Medical Center.

Our Mission: To provide quality, relevant outreach and continuing education programs and services to the people in Taylor County by extending the resources of Texas AgriLife Extension Service to meet identified community needs.

Extension Program: Taylor County has a strong Extension program based on addressing needs identified by citizens who serve on the Extension Program Council, the Executive Board, or one of its three program area committees,  Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, and 4-H and Youth– or one of six task forces,  Pecan, Beef, Cotton, Wheat, Pesticide, or Town and Country Women’s Fair.

Educational programs include: annual wheat/beef conferences, beef cattle short courses, pecan show, field days, food protection management training, diabetes workshop, master gardener classes, master naturalist classes, food and fiber day, and ongoing programs like pesticide applicator training, urban horticulture, nutrition education, job skills training, parent education, water use and conservation, character education, and youth development and leadership.
