Steve Fairweather

Steve joined MB&G in 2000, and he became a Principal in 2004. He manages the Technical Services Group at MB&G, which includes GIS, forest inventory, and biometrics. His expertise is in forest inventory, forest biometrics, applied statistics, and growth and yield modeling. He has also guided the development of MBG Tools, a software system for the management of stand based forest inventory data that is used across the United States.

Prior to MB&G Steve worked in academia, government, and private industry. He was a research forester for the USFS PNW FIA unit, the inventory forester for Great Northern Paper Company in Maine, the biometrician for Boise Cascade Corporation, and the biometrician for Olympic Resource Management in Poulsbo, Washington. Steve’s experience also includes nine years on the faculty in the School of Forest Resources at Penn State, where he taught forest biometrics and forest management, and eventually was appointed Chair of the Forest Science Program.

Steve has also been active in the Society of American Foresters, where he chaired the Forest Inventory Working Group and was eventually named to the Forest Science and Technology Board from 2000 to 2002. In 1998 he co-chaired an international forest inventory conference in Boise, Idaho, which attracted 300 participants from 30 countries. He has over 20 publications in refereed journals, and is a frequent speaker at workshops on forest inventory and growth modeling. Steve served as the associate editor for forest inventory for the Northern Journal of Applied Forestry from 1987 to 1993.

Steve earned his B.S. in Forest Science from Penn State in 1974, his M.S. in Forestry (Remote Sensing and Forest Pathology) with a minor in Statistics from the University of Minnesota in 1976, and his Ph.D. in Forest Biometrics from Penn State in 1982.
