James Furnish

Furnish is currently a consulting forester in the Washington D.C. area following a 34-year career with the USDA Forest Service. He served as Deputy Chief from 1999-2002, and Siuslaw National Forest Supervisor in Corvallis, Oregon from 1992-1999.

A principle Forest Service leader in creating both the Roadless Area Conservation Rule (2001) and the revised National Forest Planning Rule (2000), as well as reforming management of Oregon’s Siuslaw NF from timber production to restoration principles.

He worked on a broad range of environmental issues such as watershed restoration, planning policy, roadless areas, ATV regulation, fisheries, and fire.

Jim has 9 years of experience as an FSC auditor for “green” certified forest lands and products. He also served 6 years on the Board of Directors for both Wildlands CPR (Missoula, MT) and Evangelical Environmental Network (Wash, DC), and now serves on the Board of Directors for GEOS Institute. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the Western Environmental Law Center and FSEEE (Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics) both in Eugene, OR.
