Hempstead Co Extension Office

We are part of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service’s statewide network and the University of Arkansas System’s Division of Agriculture.  Our mission is to provide research-based information through non-formal education to help all Arkansans improve their economic well-being and the quality of their lives.  Whether it is agriculture, 4-H, health and living, or community development, the Hempstead County Extension Office is at your service!


Hempstead County has 783 farms with an estimated 61,211 cattle and calves. Ranked 5 in the state in cattle production Hempstead County has a strong background in cow-calf production. The Extension Office works hand in hand with the farming community to offer programs that will fit the needs of the cattle producers. Family and Consumer Science

Extension Homemakers Clubs in the county are very active with educational learning programs, volunteering many hours at a cost value of $97,440 and constructing many cancer turbans, cancer pillows, teaching dolls, blankets, caps and Christmas Stockings to donate to local cancer patients, Arkansas Children's Hospital, UAMS Hospital and local hospitals for community service hospitals.

One hundred and twenty-three child care providers completed ten hours of training with 90% of them indicated that they adopted one or more of the skills and utilized them in their child care centers. Family Life programs included Parenting Journey, Personal Journey, Marriage Journey and Newlywed Smart packets.  For more information call Terrie James at 870-777-5771.

The Master Gardener volunteer program provides an opportunity for individuals interested in gardening to learn and serve their communities. Arkansas SNAP ED

SNAP-Ed provides nutrition education to food stamp recipients and those individuals and families who are eligible to receive nutrition assistance. As a result of a partnership between the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, the Arkansas Department of Human Services, and the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, SNAP-Ed is helping Arkansans eat better so they can live better.  For more information please call Terrie James at 870-777-5771.
