Beans&Greens serves as a model to help drive both demand and supply of healthy local foods for residents in our community who need it most.

Beans&Greens aim is to help local shoppers that have government provided food assistance shop at local farmers markets. Beans&Greens does this by providing “matching dollars” when shoppers choose to use their SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) assistance monies and SFMNP (Senior Farmers Market Nutritional Program) coupons. The matching dollars make healthy produce both more affordable and also extend SNAP benefits.

Beans&Greens partners with local farmers markets that are frequented by low income shoppers and/or located near neighborhoods with high levels of poverty.

The program makes healthy local produce both more accessible and more affordable. For small-scale farmers, new customers visit their stalls and their business revenues have improved from new sources of revenue.

The match on SNAP is $1 for $1 up $25/week/customer at most markets. One partner, City Market, matches up to $15/week/customer.

The Beans&Greens Match

Currently, the Beans&Greens program offers the match on purchases made with SNAP or Senior Vouchers.

SNAP =  Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program
Senior Vouchers =  Senior Farmers Market Nutritional Program

Visit the Market Information Booth for details on how to obtain and use market tokens.

Tokens: Most participating farmers’ markets use wooden tokens to make purchases with food assistance currency or debit. Tokens must be used at the farmers’ market where they are issued
Debit Cards: Most participating markets accept debit cards for payment. Purchases made by debit cards or cash are not eligible for the Beans&Greens Match.

No change is given on transactions made with SNAP tokens, as this violates USDA rules.

City Market will match up to $15/week/SNAP card holder.
