Friends of the Riverfront

Our Mission

Increase awareness and engagement with the Pittsburgh region’s rivers and riverfronts through activities, stewardship and expansion of land and water trails.

Founded in 1991, Friends of the Riverfront works to reclaim and restore the Pittsburgh region’s riverfronts for public use. We maintain, promote, and improve the 24-mile Three Rivers Heritage Trail and 18 Three Rivers Water Trail river access points. We build and expand these trail systems through collaboration with community partners, government officials, and a diverse volunteer base. Together, we have transformed our rivers and riverfronts from industrial wastelands to internationally recognized examples of environmental renewal.

In 2011, Friends of the Riverfront celebrated our 20th Anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, we published Forging Connections: Twenty Years of Building the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, an exploration of our history and how we built the trails in the Pittsburgh region.

Strategic Plan

Friends of the Riverfront periodically reviews its mission and program goals to develop a strategy for growth and success in areas of land trail development and usage, river trail development and usage, stewardship, and special events.
