Fremont Weir Wildlife Area - Sutter & Yolo Counties

Location:

  • From Knights Landing: Approximately 4.6 miles southeast of Highway 113 in Knights Landing on Roads 116 and 116B, turn left on Road 116A for 0.6 miles to the parking lot.

Area Regulations:

  • No rifles or pistols may be used or possessed.
  • Camping and trailers are not allowed.

Access from Sacramento:

  • Travel I-5 north toward Woodland. About 5.5 miles after crossing the Sacramento River, turn right or north toward Knights Landing on Road 102 (or E8). Travel north from I5 for 5 miles on Road 102 and turn right (east) on Road 16 for 2.8 miles to Road 116B. Veer left on Road 116B for 0.9 miles and turn right on Road 116A for 0.6 miles to the parking lot.

Access from Woodland:

  • Travel I-5 south toward Sacramento 1-2 miles and turn north toward Knights Landing on Road 102 (or E8). Travel north from I5 for 5 miles on Road 102 and turn right (east) on Road 16 for 2.8 miles to Road 116B. Veer left on Road 116B for 0.9 miles and turn right on Road 116A for 0.6 miles to the parking lot.

Description:

  • The area is a floodway. When the water level in the Sacramento River reaches a high level, the water flows over the Fremont Weir into the Yolo Bypass. It consists of1,461 acres of tall weedy vegetation, brush, valley oaks, willows and cottonwood trees. Pheasant, valley quail and waterfowl are found here.
WARNING: DO NOT ENTER THIS WILDLIFE AREA WHEN THE RIVER IS RISING OR WATER IS FLOWING ACROSS THE FIELDS


Recreational Use:

  • Type C Wildlife Area - no permits, passes, or reservations are required.
  • Fishing, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing are permitted.

Hunting:

  • Allowed daily from July 1 through January 31 for all legal species, and during the spring turkey season, when only turkeys may be taken.
  • Pheasant: Population is good
  • Waterfowl: Best hunting is late in the season if there has been enough rain to fill the low areas.
  • Mourning dove, cottontail and jackrabbits: Scattered throughout the area.
  • Deer (Zone D-4), quail, and wild turkey - Populations are fair.

  • None
