Barrier Island Trust

The Barrier Island Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the precious natural resources of Florida's barrier islands, with special emphasis on Dog Island and the Apalachicola Bay area. It was created with the aid of the Nature Conservancy to establish a stewardship program and manage the Jeff Lewis Wilderness Preserve on Dog Island. The Preserve is owned by the Nature Conservancy; its 1,300 acres of pristine wilderness constitute approximately 80% of Dog Island. To accomplish its objectives, the Trust manages the Preserve, supports and promotes research relating to barrier island ecology and translates that research into education programs and effective management policies.
