Assumption Parish is situated in the serene bayou country in the south-central portion of Louisiana. It is an irregular-shaped parish and is located about 30 miles south from Baton Rouge and 60 miles west of New Orleans. Major industries include: fabrication, sugar, food products, fishing, agriculture. The Madewood Arts Festival, held in the spring at Madewood Plantation, features lectures, exhibits, art shows, ballet, and concerts. An antebellum Christmas celebration is also held on the Madewood grounds in early December.

Agriculture & Natural Resources
Agriculture is a $58+ million industry in Assumption Parish, and through advisory committee meetings sugarcane producers voiced their opinions over profitability and environmental concerns. Through continued educational efforts, such as growers meetings in which 39 producers were given information on weed, insect and disease control practices, producers were able to incorporate these recommendations into their operations to help increase profitability. In addition, through pesticide recertification, residents and producers were educated in the safe handling, use and storage of pesticides, contributing to a cleaner and safer environment.
