Alpena Conservation District

The Alpena Conservation District is a local unit of government geared at the protection of our natural resources. Along with our technical staff we also provide several services to the people of Alpena county. Some of the services are listed below:

Conservation Books
We have a very nice selection of books on hand in the office. Home Landscaping, Landscaping for Wildlife, Michigan Wildflowers in Color, Wild About Birds and Woodworking for Wildlife just to name a few. We also have books for children and young adults called the Take Along Guides. Frogs, Toads and Turtles; Berries, Nuts and Seeds; Trees, Leaves and Bark and Wildflowers, Blooms and Blossoms. These make great gifts for nature lovers.

Plat Books
We have the latest Alpena County plat books available in the office for you to purchase.

Soil Survey Information
The district has a completed soil survey for the county of Alpena. Copies are now available at the conservation district office. The district is able to reproduce soils maps and any other soils information that you need. Feel free to contact us with any soils questions that you may have.

Topographical Maps
You may purchase topographical maps for Alpena County in our office. The maps show contour lines and symbols that represent such features as streets, buildings, streams, swamps and woods. There are twenty two maps covering Alpena County.

Soil Sampling
Information about soil testing is available at the Conservation District office. Whether it is a wildlife food plot, a farm field, or Mom's garden, we can help you make it grow. Soil sample bags are available at the office, and for a small fee, we can send them in for you. Don't understand how to read soil test results? Let one of our staff assist you with all of your soil testing needs.

Equipment Rental
The District realized a local need for certain items to assist producers and landowners in planting crops and trees in a more efficient and cost effective way. The District houses items which are available for rent throughout the planting season. A lime spreader was purchased with District funds to be used by producers. The cost is based on a per ton scale which includes delivery. A No-Till grain drill is also available to plant crops in a more efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The drill is rated on a per acre scale which also includes the cost of delivery. For those interested in planting a large quantity of trees, the District has made a tree planter available. The planter is used behind any tractor with a three-point hitch
