Wintergarden Groundwater Conservation District

The District is charged with conserving, preserving and protecting the groundwater. This is being conducted in the following ways:

  • Permitting wells – regulating spacing and production;
  • Increasing Recharge – currently operate two recharge structures;
  • Completed Phase I study with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) whereby all known studies of the groundwater in the District were compiled.
  • Completed Phase II whereby resistivity studies are being done on the rivers and major watershed tributaries that cross the aquifer outcrop as they contribute to recharge via underground gravels and, therefore, water flow. Also, the study is to identify and quantify distributed recharge via rainfall over the outcrop region of the Carrizo Aquifer.
  • Currently conducting study with Southwest Research Institute on the water chemistry and finger printing of the Carrizo Aquifer as it relates to the source (Edwards Aquifer, Meteoric, etc.).
  • Maintaining ongoing partnership with Texas A & M Research Center, Uvalde, Texas, to increase irrigation efficiencies with the use of lysimeters.
  • Partnership with Texas A & M Research Center, Uvalde, Texas, to study rainfall percolation on native brush versus various ages of improved land in La Salle and Zavala Counties.
  • Assistance in plugging abandoned water wells.
  • Partnering with Nueces River Authority and other groundwater districts in the region to educate public on pollution and conservation of our water resource.
