Warren Prairie Natural Area

Warren Prairie Natural Area, located in the Coastal Plain, Bradley and Drew Counties, consists of a mosaic of salt slick barrens, saline prairie, Delta post oak flatwoods, prairie mound woodlands, pine woodlands, and bottomland hardwood forest communities. Soils at the site, containing high amounts of sodium, appear to account for the sparse and irregular distribution of trees and the resultant dominance of grasses and other herbaceous vegetation. Stands of dwarf palmetto are distributed irregularly through the wet hardwood flatwoods and lend a tropical aspect to the area. The natural area provides critical habitat for the state’s largest population of the federally threatened plant, Geocarpon minimum. The potential for Warren Prairie to serve as habitat for the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker is being examined. The Nature Conservancy owns property adjacent to the natural area.
