St. James Parish Extension

St. James Parish formed a part of "Comte' d'Acadie" or County of Acadia, composed of the old ecclesiastical parishes of St. James and "The Ascension", referred to as the First and Second Acadian Coasts. The land of the parish is chiefly alluvial with some wooded lowlands and coast marshes. Game and fish abound in the streams and swamplands of St. James Parish. Perique tobacco grows only in this parish, along the Mississippi River.

The 2010-2011 economic value of sugar-cane produced in St. James Parish to Louisiana’s economy was over $55 million, of which, $31 million was gross revenue for local producers and landlords . Education efforts are delivered through grower meetings, field days, and farm visits. Tomato production is a passion of many residents of the parish.
