South Dade SWCD

The mission of the South Dade Soil & Water Conservation District is to provide local leadership in implementing conservation programs and utilizing technology that enhances, sustains and facilitates the stewardship of our natural resources. Water Conservation, Water Quality, Soil Protection and Soil Enhancement are essential primary programs.

The South Dade Soil & Water, an extension of the State of Florida, is here to work with the public and local, state and federal departments for the protection of the soil and water of our area. We cover all of Miami-Dade County and even work with Monroe County since they have no Soil and Water Conservation District.

I can think of no place in the United States where our mission is more important to the future generations that will inhabit our area. Our sole source potable water supply, the Biscayne Aquifer, is only 2' to 8' below the surface. This makes it extremely vulnerable to contamination from chemicals, petroleum, sewage and rain runoff.

The soil that produces a large part of the winter vegetable crops for our nation is poor, rock-plowed soil with little or no nutrient value. The use of chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides can contaminate this soil and eventually seep into the aquifer. We therefore work to educate the public, agricultural and urban, on the better alternatives which are organic products.

All of our work must be accomplished through grants. Being a non-profit 501-C3 organization, our district can accomplish its goals in the most cost-effective operations. Grant donors for environmental work are requested to offer their help to the SDSWCD
