Sitka District Extension

The Sitka District stretches from Sitka, South and East to the Canadian border. The district's population includes the state's fourth (Ketchikan) and fifth (Sitka) largest cities. The 2000 census estimated the populations of Ketchikan and the Sitka borough at 7,922 and 8,835 respectively. Petersburg and Craig are also home to residents numbering in the thousands. About a quarter of the population across the district is Native, although some smaller communities (Kake, Klawock, and Hydaburg) have an over 80 percent Native population. The principal communities within the district include Sitka, Kake, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Metlakatla (Annette Indian Reservation), Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, Thorne Bay, Hollis, Coffman Cove, Whale Pass and a number of smaller villages.
