Project Highlights:

 

  • Pillar Point pampas & jubata grass removal
    • 119 acres of pampas & jubata grass populations are being controlled at Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay. San Mateo WMA uses mechanical and chemical control to manage and reduce pampas & jubata Grass populations. Through this project, native coastal vegetation is being protected and restored. Project partner: Peninsula Open Space Trust.
  • St. John’s Wort eradication project
    • St. John’s Wort is being controlled at Cloverdale Coastal Ranches in Pescadero. The management area is 200 acres. San Mateo WMA uses mechanical and chemical control to manage and reduce St. John’s Wort populations. Through this project, native coastal vegetation is being protected and restored. Project partner: Peninsula Open Space Trust.
  • Multiple weed control at Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve 
    • Twenty acres of land are being protected at a Edgewood County Park, in Redwood City. Santa Clara WMA, Friends of Edgewood and San Mateo County Parks Department are working together to reduce populations of Italian rye-grass, oat grass, bromus species, medusa-head, yellow starthistle and Harding grass. Strategic goals are to protect native grasslands to reintroduce bay checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha spp. Bayensis). Methods of control are mechanical, chemical and flame.
  • Slender false brome control in Thornewood Open Space Preserve
    • In a continuing project, Santa Clara WMA is treating 30 acres of slender false brome in Thornewood Open Space Preserve, in Woodside. Methods of control implemented in the project are chemical and mechanical. Through the combined work of Santa Clara WMA and Midpeninsula Open Space District native grasslands and redwood forests will be protected. 
  • Past Projects
    • Removal of pampas and jubata Grass by the Pescadero Conservation Alliance
    • Yellow starthistle/wooly distaff thistle incentive program for local ranchers
    • Eucalyptus removal from native serpentine grasslands by San Mateo County Parks
    • Gorse and broom removal along Highway 84 by California Department of Transportation and San Mateo County Parks
