Northwest California RC&D Council

The Northwest California RC&D Area is sponsored by County Board of Supervisors and Resource Conservation Districts representing the counties of Trinity, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties in the northwest corner of the State of California.  The Trinity RC&D was established in 1994, covering only Trinity County.  In 2006, the RC&D Area was expanded from one to three counties and officially changed its name to “Northwest California RC&D”.

The Northwest California RC&D Area, consisting of 4.97 million acres, is located within California’s Klamath and Coastal Mountain Range and Pacific coastal plains area in the northwest portion of California, adjacent to the State of Oregon.  The California counties of Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama and Mendocino border the RC&D area to the north, east and south, with the Pacific Ocean bordering Humboldt and Del Norte Counties to the west.  Elevations range from sea level in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties to 9000 feet within the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area in Trinity County.  Topography varies from gently sloping coastal plains and river valleys to rolling hills and steep mountains.

The U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, State and National Parks publicly hold a significant portion of the Area’s land.  Public land ownership equates to 76 % in Trinity County, 17% in Humboldt County and 49% in Del Norte County, totally 47% of the Area.

As of 2007, the total population of the Area is 175,746.  The RC&D Area is also home to many Native American Tribal members.  The Area includes the Yurok, Karuk and Hoopa Valley Tribal Reservations as well as eight federally recognized Tribal Rancherias, all located within Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.   Major population centers include Crescent City (population: 4,032) in Del Norte County, Eureka (population: 25,652) in Humboldt County and Weaverville (population: 3,703) in Trinity County.

Major agricultural enterprises include vegetable row crops, wineries, orchards, flower bulbs, ornamental nurseries, dairies, poultry and livestock production.  Timber production and commercial fishing continue to be important agricultural enterprises despite historical harvest reductions due to federal environmental laws and policies instituted since the early 1990’s.
