Nahunta Swamp Mitigation Site

HUC 03020203
Wayne County
Wetlands: 33.5 AC
The Nahunta Swamp riparian mitigation site is located in Wayne County, North Carolina approximately eight miles northeast of Goldsboro. All project properties are located adjacent to Nahunta Swamp. The entire project site is approximately 249 acres in size, with approximately 126 acres of prior-converted cropland. The Nahunta project restored “Coastal Plain small stream swamp,” and “non-riverine hardwood forest” communities. Stream and wetland restoration involved raising the bottom elevation and re-establishing a normal pattern on six of the tributaries draining into Nahunta Swamp. These measures raised the local water table and restored wetland and stream hydrology on the mitigation site. Riparian buffer restoration included restoring a hardwood forest community. The entire mitigation area is protected with a permanent conservation easement. The mitigation practices have resulted in approximately 33.5 acres of riparian buffer restoration and 164,158 pounds of nitrogen offset credit.
