Moody County Conservation District

MISSION:
The Moody County Conservation District will provide the leadership in conserving the county's natural resources by assisting its residents to voluntarily implement sensible, sustainable natural resource conservation practices for themselves and their prosperity.  Primary emphasis will be to improve water quality and reduce soil erosion.

Technical assistance is offered at no cost for conservation plans on crop and grassland.  Some conservation practices are integrated crop management, tree planting, grass waterway design, grass seeding, and rotational grazing assistance. In an effort to maintain sustainable grassland species on land grazed by livestock, a resource inventory can be completed.  This inventory conducted by trained range specialists will allow for the development of a grazing plan to maximize productivity.  The plan will consider grass species, overall grass health, type and number of livestock utilizing the pasture, soil type and water availability. Grazing plans provide the livestock producer suggested stocking rates, length of time the livestock have access to the pasture and time of year each species of grasses is most palatable. Many times cost share may be available to implement these practices through USDA Farm Service Agency or Natural Resources Conservation Service programs. When these agencies cannot offer cost share, we work with SD Department of Ag, Division of Resource Conservation and Forestry, the SD Conservation Commission, SD Game, Fish and Parks, and US Fish and Wildlife Service to find other possible funding sources.

Water quality is a concern because 48 miles of Big Sioux River meanders through Moody County.  We need to keep in mind, what all residents and landowners do within the river corridor not only affects Moody County residents but the landowners and cities down stream.
