Mississippi Coastal Management Program

Coastal Resources Management Administers The Following Programs:

Coastal Preserves

The Coastal Preserves Program is dedicated to effectively preserve, conserve, restore and manage Mississippi’s coastal ecosystems to perpetuate their natural characteristics, features, ecological integrity, social, economic and aesthetic values for future benefit.

Invasive Species
Invasive species and habitat destruction are the leading causes of animal/plant endangerment and extinction. The cost of invasive species control can exceed land values in many areas.

Wetlands Permitting
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) is the point of contact for wetlands permits in the Mississippi Coastal Zone, which includes Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties. Under agreements with the Mobile and Vicksburg districts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), applications for wetland impacts in the Mississippi Coastal Zone are to be submitted to MDMR electronically through the Wetlands Permitting Portal or using the Joint Application and Notification Form. MDMR will then evaluate the permit application for completeness and forward copies to the appropriate agencies.

Beneficial Use
Beneficial Use of Dredged Material is the intentional placement of dredged sediment to provide environmental, economic, and societal benefits. The goal of the Mississippi Beneficial Use (BU) Program, working with federal, state, and local officials, is to restore and create tidal marsh and associated habitats through the utilization of dredged sediments. In order to offset ongoing coastal losses of tidal marsh, which is valuable fish and wildlife habitat, the BU program permits and manages designated marsh and habitat restoration sites where the dredged sediments can be placed.
