Johnsons Creek Natural Area Preserve

Gnarled and stunted pines and ancient red cedars and oaks are widely scattered over the steep shale slopes and bluffs that rise an impressive 300 feet above Johnsons Creek. The large size and high number of rare species at this natural area preserve rank it among Virginia's finest shale barren habitats. Among the plants here are several endemic species - plants that occur only on shale barrens. One of the many rarities present is the Shale-barren Rockcress. At least six additional rare plant and animal species are found here.

VISITATION:

Johnsons Creek Natural Area Preserve is an extremely fragile habitat and its steep slopes pose a serious safety concern. There are no public access facilities. Access by arrangement with Steward.

Also, part or all of the preserve may be periodically closed for resource protection or prescribed burning activities. Please call before visiting.
