Elk Creek Wetlands Wildlife - Del Norte County Area

  • Del Norte County - east and southeast of Crescent City.
Special Restrictions:
  • Hunting and possession of firearms and archery equipment are prohibited.
  • From Highway 101 in Crescent City, take Elk Valley Road east.
  • The Elk Creek Wetlands Wildlife Area consists of160 acres of riparian, swamp and marsh habitat located at lower Elk Creek. An old log pond supports a variety of aquatic plants that provide cover for waterfowl. Elk Creek supports small runs of anadromous fish and a resident cutthroat trout population.
Recreational Use :
  • Fishing, bird watching, and wildlife viewing are allowed. Black tailed deer, weasels, raccoons and gray fox are among the mammals that can be found here. Among the water-associated birds seen are grebes, egrets, and phalaropes, as well as upland birds such as vireos and warblers. Some of the reptiles and amphibians seen occasionally include northwest salamander, gopher snake, and western pond turtle.
