DeSoto County SWCD

The DeSoto County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a governmental subdivision of the State of Mississippi located in the First Congressional District.

The Mississippi Legislature authorized the formation of Conservation Districts on April 4, 1938, through House bill 454. Citizens of DeSoto County organized the DeSoto County SWCD in 1946.

The DeSoto County SWCD is charged with the responsibility of implementing a program of soil and water conservation in the county.

Our Goals:

  • Control and prevention of soil erosion
  • Improve water quality
  • Flood control
  • Prevent impairment of dams and reservoirs
  • Preserve wildlife
  • Protect public lands
  • Protect wetlands
  • Develop private lands and waters for recreational purposes
  • Promote economic welfare
  • Provide leadership in the promotion of the conservation of land, water and related resources

Commissioners and Deputies carry out these responsibilities by recognizing and determining conservation needs and problems in the county and then developing plans to meet these needs.
