Darke Soil and Water Conservation District

The Darke Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a political subdivision of the State of Ohio.  It was established in July 1955 and is responsible for conserving soil, water and related natural resources within Darke County.

The major function of the district is to analyze the natural resource needs, design and implement programs that preserve, protect, develop and utilize these resources in the most prudent and ethical way possible.  Programs of the district are developed as a team effort.  The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), and other agencies provide technical, financial and administrative assistance to the district.

Additional programming assistance is received from the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (OFSWCD) and the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD).  Many other agencies and organizations work cooperatively with the district in planning the wise use and management of our resources.

On a continuing basis, the district assists landowners in meeting agricultural and urban sediment and pollution abatement standards that have been adopted by local, state and federal governments.  The application of conservation practices is a cooperative effort between the district and the landowner with the landowner voluntarily implementing the recommendations of the district.

The district is administered by a board of five supervisors who are elected by the residents of Darke County.  The board meets monthly to conduct the business of the district.  They attend meetings as representatives of the district and serve without pay.

The board normally meets the first Monday of each month at the SWCD office.  The public is invited to attend, but is advised to contact the district office for exact date and time.

Darke SWCD receives major financial assistance from the Darke County Commissioners.  In addition, the State of Ohio matches any county money and donations the district receives.

District educational programs are supported through the sale of tree packets, rain barrels, plat books, marking flags, fish and cover crop seed.
