Connecticut Fire Science Education

Despite its small size, there are a number of opportunities for fire science professionals in Connecticut—the state has about 245 stations and employs 3,040 firefighters and 550 fire inspectors and investigators in an effort to prevent loss of life and property due to fire.

In addition to numerous job opportunities, Connecticut also compensates firefighters and other fire safety and emergency service professionals well. Take a look at annual salaries for firefighters, fire inspectors/investigators, and first-line supervisors in Connecticut:

Connecticut Fire Service Careers 10th Percentile 50th Percentile 90th Percentile
Firefighters $37,040 $59,420 $73,670
Fire Inspectors and Investigators $19,150 $57,390 $89,700

Connecticut’s Fire Science Schools

Connecticut is home to six accredited schools that offer degrees in fire science, plus the Connecticut Fire Academy, which provides education and physical training for certification tests as well as administering them. In addition to a written exam, firefighter applicants must demonstrate their practical skills and application of knowledge and pass a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).

The state’s community colleges offer fire science programs, which give students the opportunity for either certificates or an associate degree. For careers in the industry more advanced than firefighting, students generally pursue at least an associate degree, which can be earned in 2–3 years depending on one’s schedule. Fire inspectors and investigators often hold a college degree in addition to professional experience. It’s important to note that Connecticut’s University of New Haven not only offers a bachelor’s degree in fire science, but also a master’s – one of the few universities to do so.
