Baxter State Park

Sitting in the heart of Maine with Mt. Katahdin as its crown jewel, Baxter State Park welcomes adventurous lovers of the outdoors with thrilling hikes, climbs, and other recreational activities. Home to numerous mountains, Baxter’s two most notable clusters are the peaks comprising and surrounding the Katahdin massif and the cluster of peaks in the northern part of the park consisting of the Traveler Range.

Maine rock climbing doesn’t get much better than Mt. Katahdin! Baxter State Park offers some of the most remote and challenging rock (technical) climbing in the Northeast. Climbers can find any type of climbing to test themselves, from bouldering to multi-pitch climbs.

Its hiking trails are the true spirit of Baxter State Park, which boasts more than 200 miles of trails in some of the wildest and most breathtaking terrain in New England. Wandering in wonder through the park’s forested areas, hikers often cross paths with wildlife both large (moose, bear, deer) and small (otter, muskrat, woodchucks, snowshoe hare, even a flying squirrel). Trails range in ability level from an easy hike up to Big and Little Niagara Falls to the strenuous all-day climb to Baxter Peak. Like so much else in Maine, Baxter State Park abounds with choices sure to stimulate and challenge every visitor.

Baxter is more rugged than many state and national parks in Maine and across the country. There is no running water in the park - you must bring your own or purify water from streams and ponds. There is also no electricity and all round are unpaved and narrow.
