Nome - Northwest District

The Northwest Outreach Center serves the area of Nome, 15 villages in the Bering Straits Region, Kotzebue, and the 11 villages that make up the Northwest Arctic Borough. The population of this region is 16,505, spread over an area of 80,000 square miles. All communities in the district must be reached by air; even the hub communities of Nome and Kotzebue require air travel to reach because there are no roads into this region from the rest of the state. Eighty three percent of the region’s population is Native Alaskans including Siberian Yupik, Central Yupik and Inupiaq.
