Comments: The mitigation project involves in-stream channel restoration; as well as riparian restoration, enhancement, and preservation activities on approximately 9.5+/- acres of privately-owned property. The project site contains 3,005 linear feet of Cuivre River, a perennial, 4th order tributary to the Mississippi River. The in-stream work consists of an area totaling approximately 1,810 linear feet, which exhibits severe bank erosion. The bank stabilization methodology includes a combination of bank shaping, rock weirs (stream barbs), longitudinal peaked stone toe protection, brush layering, and vegetative staking. The restored and preserved corridor will generally extend 50-150 feet perpendicular from the channel banks. This consists of tree plantings and the removal of any invasive species. Furthermore, the sponsor will also restore, enhance, and protect 2.6 acres of wetland, made up of 1.1 acres of emergent wetland and 1.5 acres of wooded wetland. This consists of restoring wetland hydrology through the construction of a water control berm across a low spot, where water drains from a fallow field through the wooded corridor. The 5:1 sloped berm will be constructed to an elevation of 483 feet above sea level, and approximately 2.6 acres will be inundated, including wooded wetland and a fallow field. An armored outfall area will be placed within the berm where it impounds the existing drainage feature. The wooded wetland will be enhanced by having hydrology restored, and some softwood trees will be thinned and replaced with hardwood species with greater canopy height. The fallow field will have up to one foot of water depth restored, and the area to be inundated will be seeded with an appropriate mix of wetland vegetation. The engineered wetland topography will maintain at least 6 to 12 inches of water across the area during wet periods.
