Northern Long-Eared Bat Listed Threatened
Northern Long-Eared Bat Labeled as "Threatened"
 
"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it is protecting the northern long-eared bat as a threatened species under the ESA, primarily due to the threat posed by white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has devastated many bat populations."

Proposal to Remove Louisiana Black Bear from Endangered Species List
Gov. Jindal Announces LA Black Bear No Longer Endangered

Gov. Jindal, US Fish & Wildlife Service Deputy Director Guertin announce recovery of Louisiana black bear.
"Thanks to a highly successful public-private partnership spanning more than two decades, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced [May 20] that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to remove the Louisiana black bear from the list of threatened and endangered species under the ESA."

USDA Reminds Farmers to Certify Conservation Compliance, Announces Launch of Conservation Client Gateway

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reminds farmers to file a Highly Erodible Land Conservation and Wetland Conservation Certification form (AD-1026) with their local USDA Service Center by June 1, 2015. The 2014 Farm Bill requires producers to have the form on file in order to remain eligible, or to become eligible for crop insurance premium support.

On Wednesday, the USDA also announced the launch of the Conservation Client Gateway, with which producers will have the ability to work with conservation planners online to access Farm Bill programs, request assistance, and track payments for their conservation activities. Unfortunately, form AD-1026 is not yet a part of this program, but USDA officials told Resources First it is under consideration.

Now that California is in its fourth year of drought, technology such as an app that allows farmers to remotely check the precise condition of the soil have become all the more necessary - not just to stay financially solvent, but to meet the demands of the public.

Legislative Victory in Texas

From the Texas Agricultural Land Trust: "HB 1925, authored by Representative Charlie Geren, will move the Texas Farm & Ranch Lands Conservation Program to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD). TPWD is well-suited to ensure that the program meets its purpose, which is to conserve Texas' farms and ranches that provide our state's critical natural resources." The program also received its first legislative appropriation of $2 million.
