A large part of the Wickenburg NRCD land is owned by the government, State and federal. The primary land uses are for grazing livestock, wildlife habitat, watershed protection and outdoor recreation.

Although it was historically a sparsely populated area used mainly for ranching and mining, this area has seen a large increase in population of permanent and winter residents due to its proximity to Phoenix. Most of the District is still used for livestock grazing, mainly on federal and State land grazing permits. Many small horse properties are found near Wickenburg and some other parts of the District.

The District facilitates technical assistance and cost sharing by the NRCS and other agencies for its cooperators to improved livestock management, wildlife habitat, and watershed protection. These practices include water development, fencing and brush management. In addition, educational programs are provided to inform local residents and visitors about the importance of sound land management for the local economy, erosion and flood control, wildlife and aesthetic qualities.
