Hemphill County Underground Water Conservation Districtlast updated: September 2014

Canadian has one foot steeped in its rich, heritage past, and one foot poised and ready for the future. Protecting our natural assets, namely water, is a key component to striking that delicate balance between then, now, and tomorrow.

The residents of Hemphill County can boast being home to a true Texas oasis. The Canadian and Washita Rivers, along with all of their tributaries, symbolize not only a precious resource, but a way of life surrounding water that has defined our community for more than a century.

The demand for increased agriculture, energy production, and the unprecedented growth of metropolitan cities in Texas – threaten both this natural resource, and this way of life. There is truly a great and proven imbalance between water consumed, and water available to sustain this consumption. But through thoughtful, collaborative, scientific planning, we can slow the decline of this critical service provided by nature.
