World PEAS Marketing Cooperativelast updated: January 2014

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) embodies a unique relationship between producers and consumers, which benefits consumers, farmers, local communities and the environment.

Also known as farm shares, CSAs connect small farmers directly with a community of "shareholders." CSA shareholders purchase their share of the harvest prior to the growing season (January through April), allowing farmers to plan their crop schedules according to a guaranteed customer base, while also having the benefit of cash flow during the winter months to purchase seeds, implements, and soil amendments.

During the agricultural season (June through November), shareholders then receive a "share," or box, of the produce harvested each week.
