Terrell County Extension

Terrell County is located in Southwestern Texas. Sanderson, the “Cactus Capital of Texas”, lies deep in the canyons, about one hour west of the Pecos River and about 25 miles north of the Rio Grande River, and Mexico. The total area of the county is approximately 1,530,240 acres or 2,391 square miles.

The topography consists of broad, level plateaus and rolling hills to steep hills and canyon walls with a few long narrow valleys.

According to the 2000 Census, the total County population is now 1,081. Dryden is the only other town in the county.

Already a leader in Rural Technology, Sanderson had early local dial-up internet service and was featured in a PBS television special, “Digital Nation.” We now have both wireless and dial-up internet access, and public access internet from the library and Visitor Center (among other locations), and web sites for the county, school district and many businesses. The “Digital Divide” will not separate us from an educated workforce and pursuit of opportunity in and from Terrell County.

Our geographic location and altitude of about 3,000 feet give Sanderson and the County a climate similar to that of Egypt and unparalleled in the Southwest! Most days are wonderfully clear, sunny and breezy. Total snowfall is 2/10 inches a year. Are we rural - the nearest traffic signal is 65 miles away!
