Semitropic Ecological Reserve

The Semitropic Ecological Reserve is approximately 14,900 acres. Vegetative communities are primarily non-native grassland, shadscale scrub, and alkali sink scrub. Numerous sensitive species are known to inhabit Northern Semitropic Ridge.

The property was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 2007. It is comprised of several parcels that were acquired as mitigation for the loss of habitat of threatened and endangered species in the San Joaquin Valley. This mitigation was required for permits issued under the Federal Endangered Species Act and the California Endangered Species Act, associated with the Metropolitan Bakersfield Habitat Conservation Plan. The property is managed passively as natural lands, though past use includes grazing of livestock.
