Harold Stepler

Harold Stepler has always liked being outside. Growing up in Florida, he had numerous opportunities all around to fish and hunt. Because it was such a big interest of mine, I decided to pursue it, Stepler said. I decided to try to make a career out of it.

After attending Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas for a bachelor degree in forest management, he went right to work for Great Southern Paper Company, managing land and providing assistance to land owners all over Southwest Georgia, Southeast Alabama and part of Northwest Florida. But after a little over 20 years, the mill was bought out, and he was out of a job. I had been doing landowner assistance and reforestation work for 15 years with the paper mill, so I had a lot of contacts, he explained. I decided to turn that into consulting.

Based in Dothan, Stepler started his own company in 1990, handling whatever landowners needed: timber sales, prescribed burning, chemical application, and even installing gates. Its a broad range, so no job is ever the same, he said. But thats one thing Ive always enjoyed about forestry. You get out, meet lots of people and no day is the same as the one before.
