Gila District Office

The Gila District Office is comprised of the Safford Field Office, as well as the Tucson Field Office, encompassing the management of over 2 million acres of desert, mountains and grasslands in eastern and southeastern Arizona.  The Safford Fied Office is located in Safford, AZ. The Tucson Field Office is co-located with the Gila District in Tucson, but also has a San Pedro Project Office which is co-located with the U.S. Forest Service in Hereford, AZ. Safford Field Office The BLM Safford Field Office manages 1.4 million acres of deserts, mountains and grasslands in six eastern Arizona counties and another 118,000 acres of rangelands in New Mexico in cooperation with the BLM Las Cruces Field Office. 

The field office – whose boundaries stretch form the Navajo Nation in the north to the international boundary with Mexico in the south -  is responsible for stewardship of eight units within BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System, including the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, six wilderness areas, including the world-renowned Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness and one wilderness study area.  Public lands in this field office also include 11 Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, Muleshoe Ranch Cooperative Management Area, Black Hills Back Country Byway, Willcox Playa National Natural Landmark, Guadalupe Canyon Outstanding Natural Area, one property on the National Register of Historic Places and more than 30 miles of stream segments under consideration for Wild & Scenic River designation. 

Tucson Field Office The BLM Tucson Field Office manages more than 600,000 acres of desert, mountains and grasslands within  five southeastern Arizona counties, and shares the international border with Mexico.  The field office is responsible for stewardship of eight National Landscape Conservation System units: San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (RNCA), Las Cienegas National Conservation Area,  Ironwood Forest National Monument, four wilderness areas,  63 miles of river suitable for Wild and Scenic River Designation and the Gila River Canyons passage of the Arizona National Scenic Trail.  The Tucson Field Office also oversees six properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places and seven Areas of Critical Environmental Concern. Public lands within the Tucson Field Office also provide excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation including world-renowned birding along the San Pedro River. The San Pedro Project Office is co-located with the U.S. Forest Service in Hereford, AZ.
