Culberson County Extension

Van Horn Crossroads of the Texas Mountain Trail
Welcome to Culberson County where magnificent landscapes and awesome skies are Van Horns greatest assets. Van Horn was formed in 1881 and became a watering hole for a constant stream of steam engines carrying freight and passengers to and from the new frontier. The excellent drinking water, along with a mild climate gradually drew more pioneers to the area. Ranching and mining, in addition to the Texas & Pacific Railroad, encouraged settlement. Van Horn is the seat of Culberson County government. and counts “wind farming” as one of its twenty-first century industries. Hunters prize the area’s big horn sheep, mule deer, aoudad, javalina, antelope, quail, and dove. The spirit of adventure, acceptance of individualistic pursuits, strong family ethics, and the willingness to work hard have built Van Horn into a community deep-rooted in the American dream.
